Credit Monitoring
Credit monitoring services allow consumers to easily access and track their own reports. This is a useful service because it keeps consumers informed about the information contained in their reports. With identity theft as a fast growing crime, it is important to review the contents of your credit reports on a regular basis. Many people who have had their identity stolen are unaware it has occurred until they try to qualify for financing. In addition to simply allowing you to view your reports, most service companies also offer tools which can help you correct inaccurate information. You will also be able to set triggers so that you will be notified if there is any suspicious activity occurring. Timing is everything when your identity is stolen because the thief will continue stealing from you until you either run out of credit, or find out about it and stop it. Think of the monitoring service as the fire alarm. It won't put out the fire, but it will let you know about it. After the theft is stopped you may still have to undo the damage that was done. This is where you have to decide if you want to correct the information yourself or find a good repair company.
I have provided two links below. The first is to the credit bureau Equifax which offers a monitoring service. The second link is to LifeLock, a company which provides identity theft protection. Both are useful services, although the active protection of the LifeLock service is a more complete protection of your credit.
