There are three basic types of services out there:

1: For profit companies that charge a monthly fee for there services. They repair your credit by disputing negative items on your reports.

2: Non profit companies that can charge a large one time up front fee. ($500+) They also repair credit by disputing the negative information.

3: Companies or individuals who will try to improve your credit by creating fake seasoned credit lines or new identities.

Stay away from anything that involves creating false information to post to your credit report. There is no grey area here, it is illegal and you can end up in serious trouble if you do it.

The law also does not allow a for profit company to charge for services yet rendered. This law was created to prevent companies from ripping off consumers with promises of perfect credit and not delivering.

A well intentioned law but with the following shortcoming:

The structure of the pay as you go service creates the incentive for companies to keep you as a client for as long as possible.

If your credit is significantly improved during the first round of disputes it is likely that you will drop the service because you simply don't need it anymore.

If the company can produce a little progress at a time you will likely keep their service for a longer period of time.

Thankfully, the law allows for registered non-profit companies to charge a one time fee for credit repair. Since they are not counting on future revenue from you their motivation is to get results ASAP.

-The ability to cancel the service at any time. (If it's a pay as you go service.)

-Method of repair does NOT include creating false seasoned credit lines or phantom identities.
